Deadly Blast Hits Coal Miners in Balochistan

Share

A devastating explosion struck a pickup truck carrying coal miners in Balochistan’s Harnai district on Friday, killing at least 11 workers and injuring six others. The blast occurred in the Shahrag coal mine area, a region known for its volatile security situation. Officials confirmed the explosion was caused by a roadside bomb planted near the mining site.

Victims and Heartbreaking Loss

Most of the miners killed in the attack were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla and Swat districts. These men had traveled far from home to work in dangerous coal mines, often their only source of income. Among the victims was Iqbal Hussain, a young father who had been working in Harnai for just two months to support his family. His uncle, Maqsood Ahmad, shared how the family was struggling to break the news to loved ones while preparing for his funeral.

The injured were rushed to a local health center, but some required urgent transfer to hospitals in Quetta due to severe wounds.

Officials Condemn the Attack

Leaders across Pakistan spoke out against the violence:

  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the attackers “enemies of peace” and vowed to hunt them down.
  • Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti labeled the act “unforgivable” and promised tighter security to protect civilians.
  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi echoed these sentiments, calling the attackers “heartless.”

Investigators are still working to identify who planted the bomb. No group has claimed responsibility yet.

Why Balochistan Faces Such Violence

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province, has long struggled with an ongoing conflict between separatist groups and the government. Armed groups often target infrastructure and non-local workers, accusing the state of exploiting the region’s resources without sharing benefits with locals.

This attack follows a pattern of recent violence, including a January bombing that killed six security forces and a 2024 blast that left 39 dead. Many believe poverty and lack of opportunities fuel resentment in the region.

Calls for Change

Coal miners’ unions and opposition leaders are demanding better protection for workers. Ali Bash Khan, a labor leader, stressed that miners risk their lives daily with little safety gear or security. Meanwhile, families in Shangla are left mourning loved ones who were simply trying to earn a living.

The Bigger Picture

This tragedy highlights the risks faced by poor laborers in conflict zones and the urgent need for solutions—both to improve security and create safer job opportunities. Until then, many fear such attacks will continue to shatter lives.
